Rickards basketball's Kent Carroll is your Big Bend Preps Athlete of the Week

It was another big turnout that came down to the wire for this week's edition of the Big Bend Preps Athlete of the Week contest. For the second consecutive week, more than 16,000 votes were cast and the winner was decided by 109 votes.

For the first time in the winter season, we are moving off the soccer field and onto the hardwood as Rickards basketball senior guard Kent Carroll has been named Big Bend Preps Athlete of the Week. His recorded consecutive 19-plus points performances in this recent upswing for the Raiders.

In one of the longest games in recent history, Carroll scored 24 points in the Raiders' triple-overtime win over Lincoln. The next night, while Rickards fell by three to rival Godby as Carroll scored 19 points.

Carroll didn't take his foot off the gas there as in a third straight game he scored 20 points, helping Rickards to a 23 point win over Mosley. He is averaging 19.9 points per game and has recorded double figures in scoring in every game this season except for one.

Since falling to Godby in early January, Rickards has won three of its last four and is looking to make a push before districts. It has a big game against Florida High on Friday and closes out its final week of the regular season against Leon, Lincoln and FAMU DRS.

Congratulations to Carroll and finalists Ethan Stewart (Leon), Hannah Harvey (Taylor County), Jukil Whitehead (St. John Paul II), Ameari Logan (FAMU DRS), Ashari McNeil (Godby), Cristian Alonso (Gadsden County), Ray Daly (North Florida Christian), Anthony Robinson (Florida High), RJ Hosay (Maclay), Meredith Camron (Lincoln) and Tonie Morgan (Florida High).

The Tallahassee Democrat/Big Bend Preps runs an Athlete of the Week contest every week, recognizing one standout high school athlete out of eight nominees. Voting for AotW opens on Monday and closes on Thursday.

The Athlete of the Week will be announced at noon on Friday.
