A comedian and author recently stopped in Lubbock for a surprise act of kindness, bringing joy to people at the American Cancer Society Hope House.

Rickie Smith performed at the Hope Lodge, 3511 10th St., last month as part of the R.A.K.E. (Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere) Gives Hope Tour.

“The American Cancer Society appreciates the opportunity to partner with organizations and supporters, like Comedian Rickie Smith, to create a positive experience for our guests," said Robin Gardner, Senior Manager, Hope Lodge in Lubbock.  "Our guests stay at Hope Lodge for many days or even weeks at a time, while undergoing cancer treatment here in Lubbock. The R.A.K.E Gives Hope Tour brightened the day for everyone here during his visit."

The Lubbock stop was one of 31 stops planned as Smith visits Hope Lodges across the U.S. The Hope Lodge provides free housing for 29,000 people with cancer and caregivers yearly.

“It’s an honor to work with the American Cancer Society on this tour,” said Ricky Smith, the founder of R.A.K.E.  “They do so much for so many people and hopefully, I can bring a bit of joy to those I encounter on my journey.”

Smith is known for his work as a philanthropist, author, comedian, and speaker. He also started the R.A.K.E. Tour a decade ago "to enrich lives, encourage kindness, and promote the act of 'paying it forward,'" according to a news release.
