When you think of Ricky Williams, you might think about football, because he won a Heisman and played professionally for many years. However, you might also think about marijuana, because pot got Williams suspended multiple times in his career, and also exiled him to Canada briefly. As such, the whole “pot smoking” part of Williams’ life has almost matched, or perhaps eclipsed, the “really good football player” part of his life. Fortunately, in these modern times, Williams’ affinity for marijuana isn’t as much of a detriment as it used to be, and now Williams will be running a marijuana-friendly gym in San Francisco.

Williams is a spokesperson for, and partner in, Power Plant Fitness, a new gym that will be welcoming to marijuana users in San Francisco, a city notorious for being a hard place to be in you like to toke on reefer. This whole idea springs forth from Jim McAlpine, who also founded the 420 Games, which is “a series of running events developed to destigmatize cannabis.” McAlpine says it will be a serious gym, and that “it won’t be a place to get high and just screw around. We are focused on the athletic side, not the cannabis side.”

Williams, who says he used marijuana for pain management as a player, also recently spoke on the NFL’s stance on marijuana in the wake of the Laremy Tunsil incident, saying, “I was a really good football player, a really good person, my teammates loved me, my coaches loved me, but my career and life were ruined because of a drug test. It doesn’t make sense. They have to take a more humane approach to this.”

Marijuana and Ricky Williams, forever intertwined.
