Need to get rid of your Christmas tree in Elk Grove? Here are four recycling options

The season of giving is coming to an end, which means holiday trees are expected to come down and be thrown out from households soon, if they haven’t already.

For Elk Grove residents, the city has provided four different options for proper disposal of the evergreens.

According to the city’s website, the options include: curbside collection, a Green Waste cart or self-haul to one of two participating waste collection centers.

Those electing for the curbside collection service should leave their holiday trees on the curbside next to Green Waste. Households should have their trees laid out by 6 a.m. during residents’ assigned pickup days now through the week of Jan. 28, according to the city.

For trees taller than 6 feet, the city recommends that they are cut into smaller pieces that are 3 feet long or shorter.

The city wants to ensure that any and all ornaments, stands, lights, nails, tinsel and metal rods are removed from the tree before setting it out for pickup or disposal.

Households who intend to use their Green Waste containers, which are gray in some Elk Grove areas, can also place the smaller pieces into the Green Waste cart. The pieces must fit completely into the cart with the lid closed, according to the city.

Elk Grove residents can also self-haul their holiday trees to the Special Waste Collection Center located at 9255 Disposal Lane in Elk Grove. Its hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday.

Residents of Sacramento don’t have to travel south to Elk Grove to get rid of their trees. The Elder Creek Republic Services Transfer and Recovery Station at 8642 Elder Creek Road in Sacramento will also accept recycled trees from Sacramento as well as Elk Grove residents.

The Elder Creek site is located between Florin-Perkins Road and Watt Avenue. According to the city of Sacramento website, it will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 6 for holiday tree recycling.

There is no charge for recycling trees at the specified locations. The locations will not accept artificial, flocked or “live” trees with root balls, according to the city’s website.

As for regularly scheduled trash pickup, there will be no collection services on New Year’s Day. Residents with Monday pickup services will have their garbage collected Tuesday instead.

All remaining service days will shift a day later, with Friday collection being services on Saturdays. According to the city’s website, services will return to normal Jan. 8.
