Topical Treatments to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles

Believe it or not, there are some amazing topical products on the market that treat forehead wrinkles and actually make a difference. New York City-based board certified dermatologist from Union Square Laser Dermatology Dr. Jennifer MacGregor says first things first, you'll want to eliminate any inflammation. "Inflammation tears up collagen and destroys skin," she tells us. Look for products containing, mild niacinamide, colloidal oatmeal, and dimethicone to gentle reduce any inflammation you may be experiencing.

Next, you'll want to incorporate products containing glycolic and hyaluronic acids to hydrate and plump, as well as protectants/occlusives (castor oil or vaseline) to lock in any of the moisture provided by the acids.

If you're still finding yourself struggling to smooth wrinkles, Dr. MacGregor suggests trying something a little stronger, like active topicals containing tretinoin, retinols, antioxidants, peptides, magnesium, that can help to reduce and prevent lines.

In addition to topical products, esthetician and founder of Glo Spa, Sai Demirovic, recommends trying a wrinkle patch to temporarily "freeze" those muscles, like the SiO Face Lift patches ($40; siobeauty.com).

Injections to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles

The easiest and quickest way to see an immediate result is injectables. According to Dr. MacGregor there are several types of procedures that can reduce those forehead wrinkles. Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injections "relaxes the pull of facial & skin musculature which cause creasing and crepy texture as well as reducing the appearance of pores through the same effect," which will result in less expression lines and smoother skin over time.

But if deep lines have already set, fillers can be a great way to fill in lines and smooth the surface of the skin, says Dr. MacGregor. You may also want to try diluted collagen stimulators, which can even include your own blood plasma to "smooth and stimulate younger healthier collagen."

The best way to effectively treat forehead wrinkles is combining a great topical routine with injections, says Dr. MacGregor

Demirovic agrees adding that other non-invasive treatments in combination with topicals and injections is a well-rounded approach to getting rid of wrinkles and lines. "Botox is always a quick fix and will offer a great improvement, but if you have very deep fine lines that you have never been treated before, you may need to compliment this with microneedling or fillers."

Non-Invasive Ways to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles

Demirovic says there are a ton of great non-invasive treatments that can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, usually over time with multiple treatments.

For example, she says chemical peels can "slough off dead skin and reduce the appearance of thin fine lines," and microneedling will "soften" lines by resurfacing and increasing collagen production.

She adds that if you're looking for a bit more strengthen to tighten your skin, try radio frequency microneedling, which "stamps tiny needles into the skin" with radio frequency to tighten the appearance of skin for about a year. Fibroblast skin tightening is another great option that uses a tiny needle that doesn't touch the skin but creates a "plasma arc" to tighten the skin.

Dr. MacGregor adds that laser treatment can also stimulate the production of a new healthy collagen matrix. "This means the skin looks and behaves younger," she says before adding that "damaged skin even makes fewer skin cancers when treated" with lasers.

How to Prevent Forehead Wrinkles

If you haven't yet developed those forehead wrinkles yet but you're in the market to prevent, the best method is to start treating wrinkles at the first sign of aging or around age 30, says Demirovic. You can start with Retin-A or Vitamin-A products, in addition to microneedling to stimulate collagen production.

Dr. MacGregor says that developing wrinkles and the types of wrinkles can be genetic (thanks mom and dad!) and based on lifestyle choices. Poor diet, smoking, drugs, stress, and chronic loss of sleep can all contribute to wrinkles. And one other glaringly obvious way to prevent wrinkles is always applying SPF for UV protection.

"[Apply] broad spectrum mineral based sunscreen to exposed skin every day," says Dr. MacGregor. "You get sun damage and light exposure outside in a minute, and even indoors. Daily sunscreen should be like brushing your teeth: every day."
