A Lyft driver was in serious condition after he was shot by his passenger Wednesday in an attempted carjacking in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
LIZ NAGY: Rob, investigators with the Chicago Police Department are still here on the scene collecting evidence related to that attempted armed carjacking that happened here on the West side just a few hours ago. Now police say sometime around 1:30, they got a call that somebody had found a victim inside his car here at Maple and Kostner and had been shot in the chest.
They believe this man was a rideshare driver. According to what police say right now, they say that man who was driving a passenger attempted to drop that passenger off. And as they attempted to do the drop-off, that's when police say the person who was a passenger pulled a gun on the driver and shot him in the chest.
Now the shooting happened about two blocks East of where that car ultimately ended up. The shooting, as a matter of fact, happened within about two blocks of a school that was in session at the time. We did speak with one woman who said she heard about five gunshots go off, but she did not know what that was related to.
Now back out here at the scene, investigators have been collecting things, looking at things like the victim's clothing that was left outside of the vehicle. That victim has since been taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where police say he is in serious condition after he was shot in the chest. This is a pervasive problem that has been plaguing police officers in the city all year. As of the end of February, Chicago police say they have reported about 340 carjackings just here in the city so far this year.
