House of Gucci director Ridley Scott has hit back at the real-life Gucci family members criticising his new movie.

Boasting one of the most stylish ensembles of modern times – Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Jack Huston – this dramatisation of the murder of Maurizio Gucci has certainly polarised audiences and critics.

Earlier this year, Patrizia Gucci, one of Maurizio Gucci's second cousins, claimed that the film was not true to life – even through Scott collaborated with the famous fashion house on the movie.

"I tried to be as respectful as possible by being as factual as possible, and as factual as we can possibly imagine," the legendary filmmaker recently shared with Total Film.

"Time and space sometimes has to jump because of the nature of the length of the film. But the people that were writing from the family to us at the onset were alarmingly insulting, saying that Al Pacino did not represent physically Aldo Gucci in any shape or form.

"And yet, frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? Excuse me! You probably have the best actors in the world, you should be so f**king lucky," he stressed.

"The story, in a funny kind of way, it's a satire. And therefore, satire is really a posh way of saying it's a comedy. And I think a lot of it is comedic. Certainly for the first two acts."

Scott, who turns 84 this month, also weighed in on bringing Paulo Gucci to life through Jared Leto:

"There's not a lot of information about Paulo, but there are pictures of Paulo and that's exactly what Paulo looks like. We found the pictures and Jared did what he did and dressed the way Paulo dressed.

"There's not a lot of Paulo on camera talking. And so that had to be, to a certain extent, imagined, but clearly Paulo was a very colourful and flamboyant man.

"The flamboyance of Paulo was quite nicely captured. And how could that be offensive? We paid attention to not getting too overt if we can avoid it."

House of Gucci is now playing in cinemas.
