Rihanna is joining the fight for climate justice. On January 25, her Clara Lionel Foundation announced that it would donate $15 million to 18 organizations involved in the climate justice movement in the United States and in the Caribbean. The donation was made in partnership with former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall initiative.

According to a statement released by the foundation, the grants will go to groups “led by women, youth, Black, Indigenous, people of color and LGBTQIA+ communities.”

“At the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), our work is rooted in the reality that climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally,” the foundation’s statement continued. “Under-resourced countries, communities of color, and island nations are facing the brunt. To combat this inequity, funders must build partnerships with organizations, acknowledging their deep understanding of what is necessary to achieve climate justice in their own communities.”

Some of the organizations to receive the donation include the Black Feminist Fund, the Caribbean Youth Environment Network, the Indigenous Environmental Network, and the Movement for Black Lives.

Rihanna, who is from Barbados, founded CLF in 2012 to honor her grandparents and help aid entities fighting for climate and racial justice in Africa, North America, and the Caribbean. Since the on-set of the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve donated over $10 million to those responding to the virus in marginalized communities, community-based organizations in Detroit and Flint, Michigan, and to those helping domestic violence victims in Los Angeles.
