Rise in bird illnesses prompts ODNR recommendations

·1 min read

Jul. 7—ALLEN COUNTY — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has been monitoring an unknown illness impacting birds across the state. ODNR is recommending that individuals take down and clean their bird feeders and birdbaths with 10 percent bleach solution to prevent further spread of the disease. Hummingbird feeders are not included in the recommendation.

Sick birds can be identified through symptoms such as crusty, bulging or sunken eyes. The primary species being affected are blue jays, common grackles, European starlings, American robins and house sparrows.

Anyone who observes a sick or deceased bird can report their findings to ODNR through an online form.
