Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 25-26

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 25, the 176th day of the year — 189 days remain in 2022. On this day 1978, the rainbow Pride flag — created by Gilbert Baker — made its debut at the Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day parade in San Francisco.

Here & Now

• Gayle Walsh was a beloved member of Newport's hospitality industry, a mother-like figure for her fellow employees at One Pelham East, where she started as a bartender in 2004 and worked her way up to assistant general manager.

"To the public, Gayle was the lifeblood of Newport 's restaurant scene — the person who'd be dancing on the bartop on a slow Wednesday or at the quiet end of the bar lending her ear to anyone who needed it," said Chris Kilroy, owner of the Thames Street nightclub. "To those who worked here, she wasn't Gayle. She was Mama G, who was there for their good and bad days, through marriages and expanding families."

Walsh died unexpectedly June 10 after personal struggles, and a fundraiser to benefit her family will be held Sunday at the Pelham. Read my story here.

• Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina just sold for $174 million, and the new owners have some big plans for the 257-room hotel on Goat Island. Check out my story here.

• A group of Portsmouth students are in line to win a prestigious award for their work on the AgInnovation Farm, but they need some financial assistance to fund a trip to Washington, D.C., to be recognized. Learn how you can help here.

• A member of the Middletown Town Council has some thoughts on school regionalization, and he put pen to paper for a guest view for The Daily News. You can read it here.

• Speaking of combining the districts, you can have your voice heard by filling out a survey on the subject. You have until June 30 to do so. Click here to get started.

• The state Department of Health is warning people not to make contact with Melville Pond in Portsmouth because of blue-green algae blooms. Keeps those dogs away from there this weekend.

• Have a safe and happy weekend!
