Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Aug. 4

Last week Newport Hospital kicked off its 150th-anniversary celebration.

It's quite the accomplishment for any entity to make it 150 years and certainly for the good of Aquidneck Island it doesn't appear the hospital is going anywhere soon.

But it also got me wondering a little bit about what hospitals looked like back in 1872 when Newport Hospital started operating.

This curiosity brought me to the University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing website and a section on the history of hospital.

It's kind of crazy to think about it, but Newport Hospital opened just seven years after the end of the Civil War but that time ushered in a change of how hospitals operated.

Newport Hospital leadership and local officials display the 150th anniversary banner before flying it on the hospital’s flagpole. Pictured left to rigth: Sen. Louis DiPalma; Dr. Jeffrey Gaines, senior vice president and chief medical officer, Newport Hospital; Orla Brandos, vice president and chief nursing officer, Newport Hospital; Crista Durand, president, Newport Hospital; Newport Mayor Jeanne Marie Napolitano.

"Between 1865 and 1925 in all regions of the United States, hospitals transformed into expensive, modern hospitals of science and technology. They served increasing numbers of paying middle-class patients. In the process, they experienced increased financial pressures and competition," the site noted.

Along with that it was noted that the "power of science" became more prevalent is hospital decisions, which is certainly good news for those that have images of alternative health care methods such as leeches playing a prominent role.

Congratulations Newport Hospital, we've come a long way since the 1870s.
