Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Sept. 10-11

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 10, the 253rd day of the year — 112 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1991, Seattle alternative rock band Nirvana released its landmark single “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” bringing grunge music into the mainstream.

Here & Now

• We journalists don't take much at face value. So when The Daily News was tagged in a social media post that alleged Rogers High students were to blame for painting the Islander Spirit Rock on the Middletown High campus, I went looking for answers.

What I found out through official channels was the rival Vikings had nothing to do with it. You can read my story here.

• If you've never been inside the Marble House or to the Green Animals Topiary Garden, now's your chance. There will be free admission this weekend for Newport County residents to select Preservation Society of Newport County properties. Learn more here.

• Coming up Monday, a Return to Camelot presentation — celebrating the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier — is scheduled at St. Mary's Church in Newport, site of the nuptials on Sept. 12, 1953. Learn more here.

• Speaking of the Kennedy wedding, when we were cleaning out The Daily News office at Malbone Road a few years back, we came across a box of old negatives. They were scanned in and proved to be never-before-published photos of the ceremony. A tremendous find. I put them in a gallery you can check out here.

• The Prudence Island Planning Commission will hold its annual joint meeting with the Portsmouth Town Council this morning at 10 a.m. Among the items on the docket are police coverage of the island and ARPA funds. Find the full agenda below.

• Sail for Hope, an annual fundraising event organized by Sail Newport, is taking place Sunday. Find out everything you need to know here.

• ICYMI: Find a rundown of fun things to do this weekend from Editor Will Richmond.

• The New England Patriots open the 2022 season on the road Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Send your best prediction (winner and final score) to sbarrett@newportri.com, and whoever comes closest gets a shout in Monday's edition.

For what it's worth, the Patriots tend to struggle in Miami — especially early in the season — and things won't change this weekend: Dolphins win 24-20.

• Speaking of football, Middletown posted a 27-6 win over Rogers on Friday night.
