Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Nov. 26

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, digital editor for The Daily News, and today is Nov. 26, the 330th day of the year — 35 days remain in 2021. On this day in 1942, the film “Casablanca” opened in theaters. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and the winner of the Academy Award for best picture, it was selected by the Library of Congress as one of the first for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Here & Now

• Hundreds of Tiverton High School students over the past four decades learned to play the game of football under the coaching of Bob Murray.

Future generations will know the name.

Before the annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry contest between Tiverton and Rogers kicked off, a ceremony was held to rename the athletic complex at the school in honor of Murray, who coached his final game after 45 years with the program. It will now be known as the Robert Murray Athletic Complex. Read my story here.

• While it was about honoring Bob Murray before and after the game, everything in between was all Rogers, which cruised to a 35-0 win. Read my story here.

• The seniors on the Portsmouth High football team went out in style, cruising to a 38-0 win over Middletown in the 56th meeting between the rivals. Sports reporter Steve Rogers was there, and you can read his story here.

• The annual Illuminated Boat Parade on Newport Harbor will take place tonight at 6 p.m., and will be held in honor of former Harbormaster Tim Mills, who died suddenly in December 2020.

• And speaking of holiday season happenings, check out our list of events here. This is a running list, so if you have something to add, get in touch.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes about the current plight of Bishop's 4th Street Diner, which is in danger of closing. "Nobody wants this, except the developers. What people want is the Fourth Street Diner, but that makes too much sense," he writes. Read his column here.

• Thursday was a day to give thanks, and a Massachusetts man is very grateful. Perhaps you remember a story I mentioned here about a local nurse who saved the life of man having a cardiac episode in a Portsmouth park? Well, reporter Bethany Brunelle caught up with that man. Read her update here.

• From the inbox: Watch anything good on Netflix lately? The wife and I currently are getting through "Tiger King II" (not nearly as good as the first one), but that wasn't the most popular Netflix show in Rhode Island in 2021.

That distinction belongs to the drama series "Manifest." I haven't heard of it, either, but apparently it's pretty popular. Anyhoo, find the state-by-state breakdown of most popular Netflix shows in 2021 here.
