Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 14, the 257th day of the year — 108 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called “The Defence of Fort M’Henry.” It was later set to music, became the “Star-Spangled Banner” and designated as the national anthem of the United States.

Here & Now

• In Newport County's lone contested primary, Portsmouth Town Councilor Linda Ujifusa took a commanding, 350-vote lead over attorney Matt Chappell and is projected to claim the Democratic nomination for the state Senate District 11 seat.

Nine of the 10 precincts in Portsmouth and Bristol have reported results, and the holdout is on Prudence Island, where there are 56 Democrats and 87 unaffiliated voters registered. In the 2020 general election, precinct 2701 cast less than 120 votes. Read more here.

• Incumbent Dan McKee is also moving on to November's general election after turning back challenger Helena Foulkes in the Democratic primary for governor. He will face Republican primary winner Ashley Kalus. Read more here.

• How did Newport residents vote in the various races Tuesday night? How about in Tiverton? We broke it all down for you by community here.

• The Newport City Council meets tonight, and among the items on the agenda is a resolution that would seek Middletown’s collaboration to reinvest the money saved from regionalization back into the schools. One councilor, though, says it's “the definition of too little too late." Reporter Savana Dunning has the story.

• You might think banning books is an issue we no longer face, but that's not nearly true. Banned Books Week runs Sept. 18-24, and reporter Zane Wolfang recently stopped off at the Middletown Public Library to speak with librarians about the works that are being challenged in 2022. Read his story here.

• Highlighted by the sale of a four-bedroom home in Portsmouth with a price tag north of $1.1 million, find the latest property transactions in Newport County here.

• There always seems to be a lot of high school girls soccer talent in Newport County, and this year is no different. Sports reporter Steve Rogers highlights nine players to watch this fall from our area teams. See who they are here.

• That was quite a storm we got Tuesday. There was flooding inside buildings and some streets looked more like small rivers. According to WPRI's T.J. Del Santo, Newport received better than 3 inches of rain, but the National Weather Service says just over 2 inches fell.

• The Middletown Planning Board will hold a public hearing tonight on the proposed Starbucks drive-through building at the Aquidneck Centre. Find the full agenda below.

• Want to get involved with the Portsmouth Historical Society? There will be two informational sessions: One today and one Saturday. Learn more here.
