Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 28

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 28, the 209th day of the year — 156 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was officially adopted. It grants citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the United States, including those formerly enslaved.

Here & Now

• The life of a small-town journalist can at times be bland, especially toward the end of a four-hour municipal meeting. But that certainly wasn't the case for reporter Zane Wolfang last Friday, when he was invited for a sail with the 11th Hour Racing team aboard the same boat it'll use in the 2022-23 Ocean Race.

As a rookie on the beat, Zane was pretty excited for the opportunity and, as it turns out, he's no stranger to sailing. His father is a boatbuilder and had a hand in constructing the PUMA-sponsored il Mostro that competed in what was then the Volvo Ocean Race (Ken Read of Newport was the skipper).

Long story short, Zane wrote about his experience aboard the Malama, the IMOCA 60 that soon will be cutting through the oceans from continent to continent. Check out his story here.
