Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 17

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 17, the 168th day of the year — 197 days remain in 2022. On this day 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Watergate complex, which served as the headquarters for the Democratic National Committee. It set off one of the largest political scandals in history.

Here & Now

• David Carlin said he’d never heard such a loud bang.

It woke him from a sound sleep and, with his dog still barking, he made his way to the front of the house, his wife Trish trailing close behind. Carlin opened the door and spotted his in-laws, who live across the street. They cautioned him not to take a step forward.

His front stairs were gone, the result of a car driving into the Fifth Ward home he's owned for 16 years. “This could have been disastrous,” said Carlin, who noted his bedroom is located at the back of the house.

I have the latest on the June 11 incident that included a vehicle crashing into Carlin's home and a rescue at the Cliff Walk. Read my story here.

• James Dring, who chairs the Miantonomi Park Commission, says there's been an uptick in graffiti and vandalism in the park recently, including the removal of an iron gate on the famed World War I tower. But is adding more surveillance cameras the solution? Reporter Savana Dunning explores that question here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes this isn't the first time gas prices have been sky high and recalls his summertime job at a service station during one crisis in the late 1970s. Read his column here.

• Truly sorry to hear about the passing of Norman Bestoso. He was a big supporter of Rogers High athletics — watching his children Lilly play softball and ND play golf — and would email me from time to time to say how much he appreciated our sports coverage.

His wife Heather worked the gate at Rogers football games and would greet me when I walked through. All in all, a great family. Norman was my dad's age, 68. Just way too young.

• Shovels will be in the ground today as a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Rogers High School is scheduled for 11 a.m. Expected to be in attendance are Gov. Dan McKee, U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Department of Education head Angelica Infante-Green, as well as local officials. Most importantly, though, Savana Dunning will be there!

The opening of the new Rogers High School didn't exactly make huge headlines. That's probably because President Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the city and there was a growing situation in Little Rock, Arkansas, that ultimately required intervention from the commander-in-chief.
