Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 16

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 16, the 167th day of the year — 198 days remain in 2022. On this day 1884, the first rollercoaster in the United States opened on Coney Island in Brooklyn. It went 6 miles per hour and cost a nickel to ride.

Here & Now

• There's something cooking in Jamestown. Quite a bit, actually, with five (yes, five!) restaurants that either opened recently or plan to open in the coming weeks.

“I think it’s going to be a restaurant renaissance in Jamestown. People are really looking forward to this,” Joan Goldstein, executive director of the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce, told me earlier this week.

The best part is all of the new spots are within walking distance to one another in the heart of the downtown area. I took a ride over the bridge to see what all the fuss was about and spoke with a few of the owners. Read my story here.

• Speaking of Jamestown, highlighted by the sale of Victorian home for $2.18 million on Conanicut Island, find the latest real estate transactions and property transfers here.

• It's a Thursday in June in Newport, and that essentially means it's the weekend. Editor Will Richmond has put together his list of area events to enjoy over the next few days, which includes Father's Day. Check them out here.

• Daily News food columnist Dan Lederer this week writes about National Eat Your Vegetables Day, which is Friday. As long you spice it up a bit, no longer will mom be badgering you to eat your veggies. Read his column here.

• Four-time Hall of Fame Open champion John Isner will be back in Newport this summer as he attempts to collect a fifth title in the grass-court ATP World Tour event. Find out who else is in the field here.

• Local nonprofit Sankofa Community Connection on Saturday will host a free Juneteenth event at the Great Friends Meeting House in Newport in commemoration of the national ending of slavery in the United States. Zane Wolfang caught up with Sankofa founder Niko Merritt for a preview. Read it here.

• Get a look at the Middletown High School Class of 2022 graduation list here. And in case you missed it, find a photo gallery from Saturday’s ceremony here.

• Coming up Friday, the Rhode Island Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is hosting a community forum to "mobilize local community members" in the fight against Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. It will be held at the Edward King House at 9 a.m. You can register here.

• For those at home playing Beach Closure Bingo, mark off these spots on your board as swimming is not recommended: Easton's and Gooseberry in Newport and Fogland in Tiverton.
