Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 8, the 159th day of the year — 206 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1968, escaped convict James Earl Ray was arrested in London and charged with the April 4 assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Here & Now

• Order a lobster roll or a plate of fried clams lately? Did you have to take out a second mortgage? While seafood prices remain high and on the rise, the sticker shock has worn off for local restaurants this year as they plan around the ever-increasing shellfish prices.

“In the seafood world, you do the best you can and hope for the best,” Jane Bitto, co-owner of Evelyn’s Drive-In in Tiverton, told Daily News reporter Savana Dunning, who spoke to a number of local seafood shops to see how they're dealing with ballooning costs. You can read her story here.

• The Newport Gulls opened their 21st season Tuesday with a 10-1 loss to host Vermont. The good news is the home opener at Cardines Field is set for tonight. Here are five things you need to know about the 2022 edition of the local NECBL team.

• Just as the first pitch is being delivered, the Newport City Council will bring to order its regularly scheduled meeting. Among the items on the agenda is a request to rename the harbormaster's building at Perrotti Park in honor of the late Tim Mills. Find the full agenda below.

• The Newport Tree and Open Space Commission will conduct a workshop today at 5 p.m. at the Newport Public Library "to hear from residents about how to improve the use and enjoyment of the city’s open space network." Find the agenda below.

• The Portsmouth Planning Board will meet tonight and is expected to take up the master plan for Church Community Housing's project at the former Anne Hutchinson School (the Senior Center).

• You probably didn't know this, but there's an election today in Portsmouth — to decide two seats on the town's Water and Fire District. The polling place will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can learn who's in the running here.

• Newport Public Schools announced Tuesday that because of inclement weather in the forecast, Thursday's graduation ceremony for the Rogers High School Class of 2022 has been postponed to Friday at 6 p.m. at Toppa Field.

• If you're a dedicated Rise & Shine! reader, you know I'm a total newspaper geek. So you can imagine my delight when I received an email from Bruce Kaye, who stumbled across old Daily News editions from decades ago.

These old newspapers from 1925 — The Newport Daily News and the Boston American — were found in a Pennacook Street home in Newport.
These old newspapers from 1925 — The Newport Daily News and the Boston American — were found in a Pennacook Street home in Newport.

"Recently, when renovating (removing) the wood flooring at our Pennecook St. house, we found a bunch of newspapers underneath dated 1925," he wrote. "Among them old Newport News copies laid flat as a sort of padding."

Great stuff. Thanks for the email, Bruce!

Trivia answer

Q: In 2005, this popular Newport shop celebrated its 75th anniversary, and the name lives on, though now in Middletown. Name the business.

A: Sig's Deli, which closed its doors in the Fifth Ward in 2008. Shawn Margolis, son of owner Maurice Margolis, opened Sig's Place on Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown two years later.

This one was no trick for many of you, though an equal amount of people guessed Newport Creamery. Kudos to Arthur Hamilton, Sean McNeill, Kristin Lombardi, Liz Gagne, Laura Loftus, Ellen Vadney, Mary Hastings, John Allan, Beverly Cardoza, David Behan, Kimberly McDowell, Pat Murphy, Patrick O'Connell, Edna Beal, Mary Hanos and Cherie Saunders, all of whom answered correctly.
