Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Sept. 13

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 13, the 256th day of the year — 109 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1963, entrepreneur Mary Kay Ash launched her cosmetics company in Dallas with her life savings of $5,000. That business venture now produces $2.8 billion annually in revenue.

Here & Now

• It's been more than three months since a four-alarm fire tore through the 197-room Wayfinder Hotel. And while it might seem not much has been done in the way of getting it up and running, the ownership team has been working behind the scenes to develop a plan for the building at the base of the Newport Pell Bridge.

Phil Hospod, whose company in 2019 purchased the former Mainstay and poured $16 million into a complete restoration, recently told reporter Savana Dunning what the next steps will be and provided a rough timeline. Read her story here.

• Providence Journal health writer G. Wayne Miller has a fantastic piece on a Middletown woman who underwent a groundbreaking heart procedure that will add decades to her life. This is a must-read story.

• Today, of course, is primary election day and if you live in Portsmouth (or Bristol), you have a choice to make — in District 11 for the state Senate, where Democrats Linda Ujifusa and Matt Chappell are seeking to advance to the general election in November.

If you're still undecided, reporter Zane Wolfang spoke with both candidates late last month. And be sure to turn to NewportRI.com tonight as the local and statewide results come in.

• Do you know where you're voting today? Are you even registered to vote? Find out all of that information at the Secretary of State website.

• In his monthly column, Editor Will Richmond previews what readers can expect from The Daily News as the general election draws near. Check it out here.

• Police in Tiverton are searching for the driver of a black SUV believed to be involved in a hit-and-run with a pedestrian after a road-rage incident Sunday. Read more here.

• Sports reporter Steve Rogers has dominated the local high school football beat, and now he's turning his attention to the other fall sports. Today he writes about the boys soccer players from Rogers, Middletown, Portsmouth and Tiverton who are expected to be difference-makers on the pitch. See who they are here.

• And speaking of high school sports, it's time to bring back The Daily News Athlete of the Week. Find the first crop of nominees and cast your ballots here.

• The Tiverton Planning Board will meet tonight, and among the items on the docket is the 24-hour Seasons market and gas station Zane Wolfang wrote about a few months back. Find the full agenda below.

• Speaking of gas, Rhode Island’s average gas price dropped another 12 cents from last week to $3.69 per gallon. That's 53 cents lower than a month ago, 62 cents higher than a year ago and 2 cents lower than the current national average.

RIP: Katey Grovell. For years, standing no more than 4 feet tall, she would march into The Daily News office, track me down and tell me to publish her results at the Senior Olympics competition in Providence. She was always proud of the amount of gold medals she won. Katey, who was 96, also was known for being a "bat girl" during the heyday of the Sunset League.

• From the inbox: We all work hard, but which state works the hardest? Certainly not Rhode Island, which ranked No. 49 on a recent list. Which state came in at No. 1? Those hard-working North Dakotans. Find the full breakdown and methodology here.
