Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is May 5, the 125th day of the year — 240 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard was launched aboard the Freedom 7 space capsule and became the first American astronaut to travel into space, a suborbital flight that lasted 15 minutes.

Here & Now

• The Parkos family has a long history in the restaurant and food service industry in this city. It started in the 1950s, when Theodore Parkos opened the Star Lunch on Broadway.

His son John founded a number of restaurants, most notably Giovanni’s and Café 200, and John Jr. opened Chicago Pizza for a time at the Café 200 location. Now a fourth generation is set to try his hand in the family business with a new ice cream shop that's set to open downtown.

Earlier this week, I caught up with owner John Parkos III and his father, who say they're not just serving up a couple of scoops of ice cream. Find out what makes their business different here.

• Speaking of scoops, Daily News food columnist Dan Lederer has the details on the newest home for the Aquidneck Growers Market, and why that's important. Read his column here.

• Today, of course, is Cinco de Mayo, and editor Will Richmond has put together a list of places in Newport County where you can satisfy that need for Mexican cuisine. Check it out here.

• The Middletown Town Council on Monday night made a move to regulate short-term rental properties in town, but it isn't following the lead of Newport. Learn why that's not the case here.

• The Newport City Council and School Committee will meet jointly in executive session tonight to discuss a potential school merger with Middletown. Council member Jamie Bova made her thoughts clear on the subject this week in an email update.

"Any discussion we have on this latest proposal must be based on the educational merits for the combined student body — we can’t simply fund a new school for Middletown at the expense of Newport students," she wrote.

• Rather than running a letter to the editor online each day, where it can get lost in the shuffle, we're not publishing them in digital form once a week as a collection. From the proposed Middletown Center to short-term rentals, get the latest thoughts from readers here.

• Today marks your last chance to vote for The Newport Daily News Athlete of the Week.

• Find the latest high school sports standouts in Newport County with the Stars of the Day.

• Tickets for the Infosys Hall of Fame Open — the annual stop of the ATP World Tour in Newport — went on sale Wednesday. Buy them here.

• Professor Carla Pestana tonight will present a virtual lecture titled “Religious Freedom in early America: Newport’s colonial Jewish community in context.” It's the first program in the Touro Synagogue Foundation's 2022 Judah Touro Program Series. Registration is required. Learn more here.
