Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 24

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 24, the 175th day of the year — 190 days remain in 2022. On this day 1953, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier publicly announced their engagement. Three months later, in Newport, they were married.

Here & Now

• Tyler Rosenberg first started scooping ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s the summer he turned 14. Fast forward a little more than a decade, and he’s a franchisee two times over. The 26-year-old Portsmouth native recently purchased both Ben & Jerry’s locations in the city — one at 359 Thames St. and the other at 33 Bannister’s Wharf.

I caught up with Tyler earlier this week to talk about his ascension from part-time employee to business owner. You can read my story here.

• As part of its Music Icon series, the U.S. Postal Service is set to release a stamp honoring Pete Seeger, a major influence in folk music and co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival. To mark the occasion, a ceremony will take place right here. Learn more here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes that after decades of trying to merge school districts on Aquidneck Island, the most effort seems a little rushed. Read his column here.

• An open piece of land with views of the Atlantic Ocean that neighbors Newport Country Club has been sold for a record-setting amount — an eye-popping $11 million. Read more here.

• In topics ranging from police cameras, to the CRMC to protecting local wildlife, find a week's worth of letters to the editor here.

• The three-day Newport Pride Weekend begins today with a kickoff social at Saltwater Restaurant at the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina. You can find the full slate of the weekend events here.
