Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for May 10

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is May 10, the 130th day of the year — 235 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1970, perhaps the most iconic hockey image was captured when photographer Ray Lussier caught Bobby Orr flying through the air after scoring the decisive goal against the St. Louis Blues to win the Stanley Cup.

Here & Now

• Back in January, a volunteer Charter Review Commission began looking over the city’s foundational document for the first time since 2014. Now, after more than a dozen public meetings, the seven-member commission has compiled a 171-page final report on the changes, big and small, it recommends to the City Council.

Reporter Savana Dunning pored through the report and plucked out the five biggest takeaways, including how the city would appoint a mayor. Check out her story here.

• At the request of the City Council during a workshop held last month, the owners of seven restaurants on Broadway created design specifications for outdoor dining patios situated in parking areas along the street. Get a peek at them here.

• A couple updates on municipal meetings. Monday's scheduled meeting of the Newport Zoning Board of Review was canceled because of a lack of a quorum (good thing I wasn't holding my breath over the Salve Regina dorm proposal). A new date has not been set.

Also, tonight's special public meeting of the Middletown Town Council regarding potential school unification has been called off. The discussion is now set to take place during the council's regularly scheduled meeting May 16.

• Check out the nominees and cast your ballot for The Newport Daily News Athlete of the Week here.

• Under sunny skies Sunday, more than 500 undergraduate students received their diplomas as Salve Regina University held its annual commencement ceremony. Find the story and photo gallery here.

• Rhode Island’s average gas price ballooned 19 cents from last week to $4.37 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast. That's 34 cents higher than a month ago, $1.49 higher than a year ago and 5 cents higher than the current national average.

• Reminder: The Sailing Museum opens to the public today.

• Newport Restaurant Group will hold a job fair today from 2 to 6 p.m. at The Mooring, located at One Sayer’s Wharf in Newport, for various positions at The Mooring, 22 Bowen’s, Smoke House, Bar ‘Cino and Castle Hill Inn. If you can’t make it, but are still interested, click here.

• From the inbox: Speaking of jobs, Rhode Island ranks No. 21 on a list of states with the most job openings. Alaska and Hawaii top the list, while Washington and New York rank last. Find the full breakdown here.

Trivia Tuesday

In February 2009, a proposal that would have allowed these to be stationed overnight at Easton’s Beach was pulled from consideration because of overwhelming opposition from residents. What were they? Send guesses to sbarrett@newportri.com.
