Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 23, the 266th day of the year — 99 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets reached No. 1 on the charts with their hit “That’ll Be the Day.” Less than two years later, Holly died in a plane crash at just 22 years old.

Here & Now

• Nobody, and I mean nobody, gets you ready for high school football in Newport County quite like The Daily News. After last week's victories, the local squads are looking to keep the momentum going, and sports reporter Steve Rogers has broken down each of the four matchups here.

• By now, you likely know I vote in the high school football statewide media poll. After a 2-0 start of the season, Middletown has entered the Top 20. See where the Islanders landed and check out my ballot here.

• Someone has been dining and dashing at local restaurants, and Middletown police are seeking additional information. Read more here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes the latest move by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is cynical at best and recalls when Middletown took in evacuees in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Read his column here.

• In topics ranging from the repaving of East Main Road to the Jamestown water tie-in situation, find a week's worth of letters to the editor here.

• Salve Regina University in a Guest View responds to a recent letter to the editor that "contained a number of untrue and misleading statements by the authors." You can read the piece here.

• There's some exciting news on the high school hockey front as Rogers and Middletown have teamed with Tiverton to form a true Newport County squad. Players on both sides feel this is going to be a beneficial pairing. Steve Rogers has the story.

• The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle will arrive at Naval Station Newport today and over the next three days will be open for tours to Department of Defense personnel and their families. Learn more here.

• The Manhattan Short Film Festival at the Jamestown Arts Center opens today and runs through Oct. 1, with four screenings planned. Learn more here.

• Because of the rain, the Newport Police vs. Newport Fire charity softball game was postponed Thursday. Now it's tentatively scheduled for Sept. 27.

• Kudos to the Rogers High quarterback-receiver tandem of Cisco Aponte and Jordan Neves, who blew away the competition to be named The Newport Daily Athletes of the Week for Sept. 12-18.

• From the inbox: Gov. Dan McKee's office announced earlier this month Rhode Island is getting a boost from the federal government for its electric vehicle infrastructure. That's a big deal considering a recent study ranked the Ocean State dead last on a list of most electric vehicle-friendly states. Washington heads the list, which you can check out here.
