Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 8, the 220th day of the year — 145 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1974, Richard Nixon in a televised address announced his intention to become the first American president to resign in wake of the Watergate scandal.
Here & Now
• Well, the Barretts survived another Boothbay-cation, complete with a birthday celebration for the now 5-year-old Jack and a wedding anniversary dinner, plus tons of fun with old family friends. But it's back to the grind.
Today is Victory Day, so that means local and state government offices are closed, as are state courthouses. But you can expect mail delivery, and U.S. Post Office locations will be open. What exactly is Victory Day and why is Rhode Island the only state to observe it? Learn more about the holiday here.
• Because today is a holiday for some, you might as well do some exploring. The Miantonomi Park Tower will be open to the public from 2 to 6 p.m. today — and each Monday during August. The hours of operation coincide with the Miantonomi Community Farmers Market, a project co-organized by Aquidneck Community Table and the Newport Health Equity Zone.
Another historic structure, the Eisenhower House at Fort Adams State Park, is open for free self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and every other Monday through Sept. 5. President Dwight D. Eisenhower used the house as his summer residence when he was in office.
A day late, but Sunday was National Lighthouse Day, and Rhode Island plays second fiddle to nobody when it comes to iconic lighthouses. From Beavertail to Watch Hill, from the tallest to the oldest, get the full rundown on the state's 21 working lighthouses here (and maybe go check out a few of them today).

• Speaking of the beach, despite concerns Newport Volleyball Club would lose space on Easton’s Beach for its tournaments, the city's Beach Commission and the club have worked out an agreement to manage increasing crowds and keep the tournaments at the same time. • Savana also writes about a STEM-focused pilot program for youths offered in Middletown — one of only 10 such programs in the country, but one that needs funds to survive. Read her story here.
