Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 12, the 255th day of the year — 110 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1995, the Harlem Globetrotters’ 8,829-game win streak, dating back to 1971, was snapped by a team of retired basketball stars that included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Here & Now

• A year ago, Luther Whiting-Collins was living in an RV and staying up night and day to help coordinate evacuations from Afghanistan from atop Mount Washington in New Hampshire. The stress of that life wore on him and and his family.

“With the pandemic, all the chaos out there, and also just spending so much time working in very sad contexts like in conflict zones, which really culminated for me when I was involved in the Afghanistan evacuation effort, that was kind of the final thing for me when I decided I need to give my heart a break from this stuff,” he said.

With that part of his life seemingly behind him, Whiting-Collins and his wife recently moved to Newport and opened a cafe on Thames Street — it actually opens for business this morning — that is named after their dog and is puppy friendly. Reporter Zane Wolfgang has the story.

• After sitting dormant for several years, the Rhode Island State Police barracks on East Main Road in Portsmouth is due for a second life. Zane Wolfang did a little digging and found out what's next. Read his story here.

• Speaking of sitting dormant, the carousel at Easton’s Beach might be receiving a well-needed checkup from the city. Reporter Savana Dunning has the latest on the named beach attraction here.

• Find the latest crop of reader-submitted images with the August edition of Your Photos.

• The state Department of Transportation has provided its weekly roadwork schedule for Newport County and the rest of the state. Find it here.

• The last few times they met, the Rogers High football team came away with a victory over rival Middletown. Those tables turned in a big way Friday night. Sports reporter Steve Rogers breaks down how the Islanders did it here.

• Speaking of football, kudos to Dan Horn, whose prediction of a 20-10 Dolphins victory Sunday was the closes one we had. The Patriots dropped a 20-7 decision in Miami.

• And my stay in the USA Today Survivor Pool was very short. Thanks for nothing, Tennessee Titans.

• It's a busy day on the municipal meeting front, with the Tiverton and Portsmouth town councils and the Newport Planning Board all expected to convene. Check out the complete agendas below.

• Enjoy it while you can. Today marks the last day this year the sun sets in the 7 o’clock hour.

• Inbox video games: As you'll see below, today is National Video Game Day and if you were like me, you spent hours zoning out in front of the television trying to beat Zelda. According to a recent survey, the most played classic video games are Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. Find more interesting tidbits, including a generational breakdown, here.
