Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 19

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 19, the 200th day of the year — 165 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1923, the medical drug insulin was introduced to the public after two years of clinical trials to treat people with Type 1 diabetes.

Here & Now

• It's very rare I get to sit down and watch television. If the kids don't have sports games, dance lessons or other activities lined up, they're usually the ones plunked on the couch in front of the tube. But on Sunday night, the rarest of opportunities presented itself.

I clicked on the TV and caught the very beginning of a segment on Rhode Island PBS Weekly about the history of film and newsreels in Rhode Island. I found it to be wildly interesting, so I tracked down the link. Watch it here.

• Remember in March when a strong wind storm resulted in the partial collapse of a gutted historic home on Franklin Street in Newport? The owners of the property now have plans to rebuild. Reporter Savana Dunning has the latest.

• The town of Portsmouth could be getting a much-desired piece of waterfront property at a bargain-basement price. Read more from reporter Zane Wolfang here.

• After identifying team MVPs, most improved players and unsung heroes on Newport County spring season high school teams, sports reporter Steve Rogers is now writing about players on the rise for next season and beyond. He kicks it off with boys lacrosse, and you can find out who they are here.

• Gov. Dan McKee will be back in Newport today to present citations to the winners of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce's 2022 Excellence in Business Awards.

• Local dance troupe Island Moving Company begins its six-day Newport Dance Festival today on the lawn of the Great Friends Meeting House in Newport. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

• It's going to get pretty hot over the next two days, with temperatures along the coast creeping into the upper 80s. The state Department of Health has offered some tips on how to avoid getting overheated, and provided a list of cooling centers throughout the state.

• The Jamestown Town Council will hold a special meeting today at 2:30 p.m. to discuss putting before voters a referendum question that would ask if licenses for cannabis-related businesses should be permitted. Find the agenda below.

• The Greg Sherrod Band will bring its mix of blues, soul and rock 'n' roll to Easton's Beach tonight. Learn more here.

• Rhode Island’s average gas price is down 11 cents from last week to $4.60 per gallon. That's 38 cents lower than a month ago, $1.56 higher than a year ago and 8 cents higher than the current national average.

Trivia Tuesday

In November 1995, when Kate Leonard first was elected to the Newport City Council, she was not the only political newcomer. This candidate, who later went on to become mayor, not only gained an at-large seat, but was the highest vote-getter in that election. Send guesses to sbarrett@newportri.com.
