Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 9

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 9, the 160th day of the year — 205 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1973, the racehorse Secretariat became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years with a record-setting, 31-length victory at the Belmont Stakes.

Here & Now

• A historic Newport estate, once the home to singer Jane Pickens, recently sold for $6.125 million, and the buyer is a known area businessman who is no stranger to pricey property in the city. I wrote all about it here.

• Speaking of real estate, highlighted by the sale of a million-dollar home in the heart of downtown Newport, find the latest property transactions in Newport County here.

• A former America’s Cup sailor well known in international circles in the sport died Saturday while competing in a regatta in Newport. On Wednesday, I spoke to the head race official to gather more details. Read my story here.

• Opponents of a proposed oyster farm in Tiverton are backing a bill that would sharply limit where new farms can be located, by requiring them to be at least 1,000 feet offshore. Antonia Noori Farzan, our pal with The Providence Journal, has the story.

• Speaking of the shore, if you find yourself near Gooseberry Beach, stay out of the water. The state Department of Health on Wednesday recommended its closure for swimming because of high bacteria levels.

• From cars to boats to baseball, Editor Will Richmond has his weekly roundup of things to do in and around Newport County. Check them out here.

• If you find yourself off having fun this weekend, Daily News food columnist Dan Lederer has a couple of items to add to your Newport food "bucket list." Read about them here.

• Talk surrounding the proposed school merger between Middletown and Newport is about to kick into high gear. The Middletown Town Council and School Committee will hold a joint meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, and the municipalities announced a series of public information sessions taking place later this month. Learn more here.

• From the inbox: According to a recent study, Rhode Islanders could save $62 a month by walking or using public transportation instead of driving. That ranks well into the bottom half on a list of U.S. states and far below the national average of $137. Find the state-by-state breakdown and other tidbits here.
