Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Sept. 19

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 19, the 262nd day of the year — 103 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1952, the United States refused to allow actor Charlie Chaplin to reenter the country because of his association with Communist organizations.

Here & Now

• Within five years, Rhode Island’s horizon will be unmistakably altered to any beachgoer, fisherman or waterfront homeowner gazing out to sea, and the coastal Atlantic from Martha’s Vineyard to Long Island will be dotted with wind turbines arranged in orderly grids like trees in an orchard.

Newport County is among the area to be impacted, as these turbines will be seen from the Ocean Drive and Bellevue districts in Newport, Sachuest Point in Middletown and Little Compton’s South Shore Beach and Goosewing Preserve.

Reporter Zane Wolfang writes about what you can expect in the years to come here.

• For the first time in a long time, all four Newport County high school football teams won on the same night. There were dramatic finishes and backups stepping into starring roles. Sports reporter Steve Rogers breaks it all down for you here.

• Steve Rogers also has highlighted some of the top girls tennis talent county, writing about eight players who are expected to lead the way for their respective teams. Find out who they are here.

• The Middletown Town Council is scheduled to meet tonight, and among the items on the docket is the second reading of a revision to the town's Comprehensive Community Plan that deals specifically with housing. Find the full agenda below.

• The Jamestown Town Council also will meet, and is expected to take up a request from resident Christina DiMeglio seeking water service in town after her well ran dry. We published a story on this issue last week. Find the full agenda below.

• Salve Regina University will welcome U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan for a community conversation today at 2:30 p.m. Our very own Zane Wolfang will be there, so look for his coverage on NewportRI.com.

• The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is underway, and if you want to watch the proceedings, Kellie's Cafe in Newport will be television them.

• If you're in need of a designer oven mitt, you can still get one — for now. Bed, Bath & Beyond recently named 56 of the 150 stores that will close, and the Middletown location on East Main Road has been spared this round. Check out the closure list and read more here.

• The Museum of Newport Irish History will host the first talk in its 21st annual Lecture Series tonight 6 p.m. at Wyndham Newport Hotel in Middletown, as well as virtually. Registration is required. Learn more here.

• The state Department of Transportation has provided its weekly roadwork schedule for Newport County and the rest of the state. Find it here.

• Kudos to all involved with the Tiverton Police Department's fourth annual Child Safety Day. We stopped by Sunday afternoon, and there were tons of things for kids to do, see and take home. A great family event.

• Ye of little faith — myself included. Of all the scores we received for the Patriots game, only two people, Robin Alderman and Anne Chaffee, picked New England to win. Mac Jones and company edged the Steelers 17-14, and Robin came closest with her final score prediction of 17-10.

John served as a photojournalist for nearly a decade before opening his own studio in a highly visible area along the busy stretch. Kudos to Jason Dunn, Larry Davis, Liz Gagne and Patrick O’Connell, all of whom identified the spot.
