Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for May 3

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is May 3, the 123rd day of the year — 242 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1980, teenager Cari Lightner was struck and killed by a drunk driver, a tragic incident that compelled her mother, Candy Lightner, to establish the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Here & Now

• If you missed Will Richmond's monthly editor's column, we're looking to add two full-time journalists to our newsroom. One position is for a breaking news/trending reporter, who will write about an array of topics in a bustling tourist town, and the other will focus on local business and development, which certainly could be a busy beat in the coming years. We're also seeking freelancers to fill in the gaps.

The ideal candidates will have experience with writing and reporting in a professional newsroom, but we'll certainly consider recent college graduates. All you need is a strong work ethic and a passion for news gathering and storytelling. One of the perks of the job is you get to work with me!

If you think you have the chops to join The Daily News team, send an email to wrichmond@newportri.com and you'll be taken into consideration.

• Tammy Combs and Deb Bacon are two of 11 tenants being forced out of their apartment building in Tiverton because of upcoming renovations. The complex recently was sold, and now they have just one month to find a new living situation. And when the upgrades are complete, the rents will rise well beyond their means.

“It’s sickening,” Combs said. “I thought this was my forever home … My grandkids are close by. I mean, just enjoying the daylights out of it.” Read the full story from reporter Laura Damon here.

• Three people escaped and firefighters rescued two animals from a house fire Sunday night in Portsmouth. Laura Damon has the story.

• The Aquidneck Island National Police Parade was held under sunny skies Sunday. Scroll through our photo gallery here.

• The Portsmouth High girls lacrosse team is undefeated thus far, but just how dominant have the Patriots been? Sports reporter Steve Rogers breaks down the numbers here.

• Rhode Island’s average gas price jumped 9 cents from last week to $4.18 per gallon. That's 4 cents higher than a month ago, $1.35 higher than a year ago and 1 cent lower than the current national average.

• From the inbox: According to a recent study, Rhode Island ranks No. 35 on a list of states with the most expensive college tuition. Higher education in New Hampshire costs students the most, while Florida is the cheapest. Check out the full breakdown here.

• Speaking of school, happy National Teacher Appreciation Day to all of the fine educators out there, especially my favorite one: My wife Olivia, who is shaping young minds today at Tiverton High School.
