Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 26, the 238th day of the year — 127 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1971, defenseman Bobby Orr signed a five-year contract with the Boston Bruins worth $1 million. It marked the first time an NHL player agreed to a seven-figure deal.
Here & Now
• One of Newport's great events — the Broadway Street Fair — is set to return this fall after two years of COVID-related cancellations. If you've never been, mark your calendar for Oct. 8. It's really a great time.
Reporter Zane Wolfang caught up with co-organizer Debbie Tungett Bailey to talk about what's different this year compared to previous fairs, and he also walked the length of the corridor speaking with business owners, who are happy to see the return of the event. Read the story here.
• If you were hoping to get your hands on one of the auditorium chairs before the wrecking ball hits Rogers High School, you're out of luck. Reporter Savana Dunning explains why here.
• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes that not only does Newport need to update its ordinances to include electric bikes, but the cyclists around the city should learn the rules of the road. Read his column here.
• How quickly and how easily will members of the Rogers High School football team adapt to a new coach and a new offensive system? Sports reporter Steve Rogers answers that and other burning questions about the Vikings' upcoming season here.
• Speaking of Rogers High athletics, if you find yourself going to a game this fall, bring a non-perishable food item. The RHS Boosters club will be conducting food drives to benefit the MLK Center. Learn more here.
• Countless college students have benefitted from the work of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell, whose Pell grant legislation opened the doors to young adults from low- and moderate income families.
On the 50th anniversary of the passage of Pell's crowning achievement in office, the man who took his place, Jack Reed, and other lawmakers are looking to "double down" on the efforts. Zane Wolfang has the story.
• Speaking of colleges, Salve Regina University was featured in Princeton Review's "The Best 388 Colleges: 2023 Edition." Read more here.
• In topics ranging from school regionalization to short-term housing, find a week's worth of letters to the editor here.
• A former Newport firefighter pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in the fatal car crash that killed 17-year-old high school hockey player Mathew Dennison. Read more here.
