Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 8, the 251st day of the year — 114 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1974, President Gerald Ford in a controversial move pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, for any crimes he may have committed while in office.

Here & Now

• A couple of weeks back, my wife mentioned to me the water in our Brita dispenser tasted funny. I didn't think much of it at the time, but a few days later, I too started to notice a distinct — and not so great — flavor.

So, because I'm the kind of guy who looks to get answers, I emailed the Portsmouth Water and Fire District and asked if they'd received any complaints. Turns out, they had.

Jessica Lynch, the chief engineer and general manager of the district, took the time to explain in detail the causes for the change in taste and odor. She stressed the water is safe to drink and meets or exceeds "all requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act."

Then, because this is a small island, we realized our children are in the same third-grade classroom at Melville Elementary. You can read my story here.

• Speaking of water, now that Labor Day has passed, state officials no longer will be testing water quality at area beaches. So which Newport County beach had the most days lost this summer because of high bacteria counts? Editor Will Richmond has the answer.

• Will Richmond also has his weekly roundup of things to do in Newport County this weekend. Check them out here.

• While most people are looking forward to the debut of "Hocus Pocus 2" on Sept. 30, another movie filmed last year in Newport — starring Diane Kruger, Hank Azaria and Ray Nicholson (the son of Jack) — recently was released. I've put together everything you need to know here.

• NewportFILM's screening of "Untold: The Race of the Century" tonight at the Casino Theater is sold out, but you can still catch the 1983 America's Cup documentary right now on Netflix. I watched the opening 20 minutes or so yesterday, and there is some fantastic footage of old school Newport.

• Daily News food columnist Dan Lederer serves up a smorgasbord of news, notes and tidbits from around Newport County. Read his latest piece here.

• Week 1 of the high school football season brings some super intriguing matchups: Rogers vs. Middletown and Portsmouth vs. North Kingstown. Sports reporter Steve Rogers previews all of the games and what you can expect to see here.

• Speaking of football, the 2022 NFL season opens tonight with the Bills taking on the Rams. I've made my choice in the free USA Today Survivor Pool, which you can still sign up for. I'm taking the Tennessee Titans, playing at home and a 5½-point favorite, to beat the New York Giants.

• From the inbox: Rhode Island is one of 10 states that has never produced an Academy Award or Emmy winner, but which state can lay claim to the most? Find out the answer here.
