Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 21

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 21, the 172nd day of the year — 193 days remain in 2022. On this day 1965, The Byrds released their debut album “Mr. Tambourine Man” that included a hit single with the same name. It ushered in the folk-rock era in music.

Here & Now

• Portsmouth will become the seventh municipality in Rhode Island to install Flock Safety license plate-reading cameras after the Town Council voted 6-1 on June 13 in favor of approving a one-year pilot program.

The goal, according to Portsmouth Police Chief Brian Peters, is to diminish the amount of suicide attempts from the Mount Hope Bridge, but the program is raising the eyebrow of the local chapter of the ACLU. While lives could be saved, the cameras can be used in other law enforcement capacities that go beyond suicide prevention. Reporter Zane Wolfang has the story.

• Five years after the Portsmouth Dog Park opened, the popular gathering place for pups and their humans is about to grow bigger with a major renovation plan in the works. Find out what's in store here.

• Rhode Island PBS is eyeing Little Compton for its next installment of the "Our Town" series. Have a unique story to tell? There will be a virtual town hall meeting Aug. 24. Learn more here. This will be the third Newport County community featured on "Our Town" after Middletown and Portsmouth.

• The Jamestown Town Council will meet tonight, and among the items on the agenda is a resolution "to opt-out of retail sales of marijuana." Find the full agenda below.

• If you missed Monday's in-person meetings on the proposed school district unification, you can watch a virtual session today from 6 to 8 p.m. Learn more here. Also, look for coverage from reporter Savana Dunning coming up on NewportRI.com.

• Aquidneck Community Table tonight is hosting its Summer Bounty Party at Stoneacre Garden in Newport. "This party raises funds to support ACT's programs, all designed to build a more accessible, more equitable, more sustainable food future on Aquidneck Island," the organization wrote in a Facebook post. Buy tickets here.

• The Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County will hold its Raise Up The Arts! event tonight at Johnny's Restaurant and Patio Bar. Among the honorees are Katie Moorhead, Sophia Rey and the late Leroy White. Learn more here.

• From the inbox: According to a recent study, the most Googled job in the U.S. is real estate agent, with 42,000 searches per month. Notary is No. 2, followed by flight attendant, pilot and travel agent. Rounding out the top 10 are: Firefighter, therapist, model, pharmacist and actor. Sadly, managing editor of a newspaper didn't make the cut.

• Happy official first day of summer!

Trivia Tuesday

At one time, there were two movie theaters on West Main Road in Middletown. One of them remains, Island Cinemas. When it closed in 2001, what was the name of the other? Send guesses to sbarrett@newportri.com.
