Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Aug. 18

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 18, the 230th day of the year — 135 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1969, Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger accidentally shot himself in the hand while working on a movie set in Australia.

Here & Now

• This past week, I've been bouncing around to various high school football practices because it's my favorite time of the year — the start of fall sports season. I've spent many a Friday night on the sidelines as the warm summer weather turns to frigid fall.

With that said, sports reporter Steve Rogers has been busy putting together some fantastic preseason coverage, and I've written a column about what you can expect from the Daily News and why high school student-athletes and parents should subscribe.

Simply put: Local bloggers aren't coming to your games — never have and never will — and those free newspapers might offer coverage of one game, delivered almost a week late. On the other hand, we'll work hard to make sure local athletes get the ink they deserve and tell the stories that matter. You can read my column here.

• Before the 2022 high school football season kicks off, we're actually taking a step back to look at some past teams. More specifically, the coaches who led our local squads to success over the years. Steve Rogers has compiled a list of the top 10 Newport County coaches of all time. Check it out here.

• A member of the Newport School Committee wants to see full-time officers inside two of the city's schools — Rogers High and Thompson Middle — but that's easier said than done. Reporter Savana Dunning spoke to a number of people about why it might be good, why it might not be good and why it might not be possible. Read more here.

• Savana Dunning was on hand Tuesday when the state Department of Transportation provided an update on the Pell Bridge ramp reconfiguration project. And she wasn't alone. There was a large crowd. Find her recap here.

• There is a new Thai restaurant in town, and it takes the place of a longtime eatery that quietly shuttered during the COVID pandemic. Daily News food columnist Dan Lederer has the details.

• From horses to George Washington, Editor Will Richmond has his roundup of things to do in Newport County this weekend. You can read about them here.

• Back in 1995, Tony Hawk became a household name when he appeared in Newport and competed in the inaugural X Games (check him out skating at Fort Adams State Park here). NewportFILM tonight will screen "Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off" at, you guessed it, Fort Adams. Learn more here.

• Youths participating in an MLK Center sailing program at Sail Newport got quite the surprise Wednesday when pod of dolphins pulled alongside their boat in Newport Harbor. Check out the photo here.

• The Philadelphia Inquirer has a story on Phillies reliever David Robertson who, as you may recall, started reviving his career by pitching at Cardines Field in the George Donnelly Sunset League last summer. Read it here.
