Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 12

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 12, the 193rd day of the year — 172 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1984, Democratic presidential hopeful Walter Mondale named U.S. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, the first time a woman had represented a major political party.

• If you've ever stepped inside Kaffeology in Newport, you've more than likely noticed the mural that adorns the walls of the Thames Street cafe. The artwork was designed and completed by Olivia Rose James, a New Jersey native who now calls the City-by-the-Sea home.

James' latest piece is a larger-than-life mural at the Hingham Shipyard in Massachusetts. Reporter Zane Wolfang recently caught up with James about how she became to be a muralist and the stories behind her pieces. Read the story here.

• A social media trend encouraging participants to shoot gel water beads at passersby has been linked to the recent arrest of two men in Middletown, but this is not the first incident involving gel guns to take place on Aquidneck Island. Reporter Savana Dunning has the story.

• The son of tennis royalty is trying to carve out his own name in the game. Brandon Holt, whose mother is 1992 International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee Tracy Austin, competed Monday at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open. I caught up with him and have the full rundown from Day 1 at the local ATP World Tour event. Read my story here.

• The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust is giving Save the Bay a big-time financial boost as the organization prepares to move its aquarium from Easton’s Beach to the downtown Gateway Visitors Center. Read more here.

• Who were the unsung heroes this past season on Newport County high school girls lacrosse teams? Sports reporter Steve Rogers writes about them here.

• The Tiverton Planning Board will meet tonight to discuss a proposed 24-hour Seasons market and gas station at the intersection of Main and Souza roads. The plan is not sitting too well with a group of citizens looking to fight the development. Find the full agenda below.

• Ever see "Moonlight Kingdom," which was largely filmed in Newport County. The Jamestown Arts Center is screening it tonight at 7 p.m., with free popcorn and a cash bar. Learn more here.

• The MLK Center will present its next "Live from the Loading Dock" concert today at 4:30 p.m. Newport Classical is set to delight the crowd with "Classical Movie Music." Learn more here.

• The Country Wild Band is taking the stage at Easton's Beach tonight at 6 p.m. as part of the Newport Recreation Family Concert series. Learn more here.

• Rhode Island's average gas price fell 10 cents from last week to $4.71 per gallon. That's 30 cents lower than a month ago, $1.68 higher than a year ago and 4 cents higher than the current national average.
