Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 7

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 7, the 158th day of the year — 207 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1979, Texas passed a bill making it the first state to declare Juneteeth as an official holiday.

Here & Now

• The state Department of Environmental Management has placed a number of shark-tracking devices in local waters, but don’t expect any “Jaws”-type moments.

According to Conor McManus, chief of RIDEM’s Division of Marine Fisheries, acoustic receivers are planted at the mouths of the east and west passages of Narragansett Bay, one off the southern end of Newport, two in the Sakonnet River and one off Little Compton.

This marks the second straight year researchers have placed receivers in this area, and last year two sharks were detected. You can read my full story here.

• Yesterday, I told you about a public tour of the progress being made on the Newport Pell Bridge realignment project. Well, it's been canceled "due to an unforeseen schedule conflict" at RIDOT. Read more here.

• From boarding the bus before the game until players stepped off with their championship medals in hand, Daily News sports reporter Steve Rogers was along for the ride as the Portsmouth High girls lacrosse team won the program's first title on Sunday. Check out Steve's story on the experience — which includes a great video of the players singing Queen's "We Are the Champions."

• The Tiverton Planning Board tonight will meet and take up a proposal for a Seasons Market and gas station on a main stretch of town. Find the full agenda below.

• Newport is now home to three sporting museums — The International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Sailing Museum and the Audrain Automobile Museum — and with just one ticket, you can get admission to all three. Learn more here.

• Rhode Island’s average gas price jumped up 23 cents from last week to $4.94 per gallon. That's 66 cents higher than a month ago, $1.98 higher than a year ago and 8 cents higher than the current national average.

• From the inbox: According to a recent survey, Rhode Islanders blow their monthly budget after just 11 days after payday. That's below the national average. Find the state-by-state breakdown here.

In 2005, this popular Newport business celebrated its 75th anniversary. While the original location has closed, the name lives on in Middletown. Can you name it? Send guesses to sbarrett@newportri.com.
