Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 16, the 228th day of the year — 137 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1977, music icon Elvis Presley was found dead in his Graceland mansion, leaving fans worldwide in mourning. He was just 42 years old.

Here & Now

• Over the weekend, I was chatting with my neighbors — both of whom grew up in Newport — and the conversation turned to the impending closure of Bishop's 4th Street Diner. I asked if they were sad about it and, surprisingly, neither had gone there often.

Both were raised in different sections of the city and said they usually went out to breakfast near their homes. That got me thinking: Now that Bishop's is closed, where can people who frequented the diner grab an early meal?

I've written about five spots in Newport, and one outside the city, you should try if you're looking for a breakfast change of pace. Check it out here.

• Local and state officials will be on hand today for a tour of the Pell Bridge ramp realignment project. The public is invited, just head to the former Newport Grand casino at 1 p.m. If you can't make it, fear not, reporter Savana Dunning will have a recap — and we've got a bigger story in the works. Stay tuned.

• A class-action lawsuit against Starbucks, filed by the Jamestown harbormaster, that sought $5 million for “misleading actions” has been dismissed. Read my story here.

• The Rhode Island Foundation is inviting Newport County residents to share their thoughts about issues important during a free community dinner tonight at 6 p.m. Learn more here.

• The state's Board of Elections is "urgently" seeking poll workers for the upcoming primary and general elections. Learn more here.

• RIP Talbot Wilson, who died last month at age 77. Talbot for years was the media contact for the Newport Bermuda Race, and I'd email him asking for story angles. He was always generous with his time and got me anything I needed.

• Rhode Island’s average gas price dropped 10 cents from last week to $4.19 per gallon. That’s 45 cents lower than a month ago, $1.13 higher than a year ago and 24 cents higher than the national average.

• The Tiverton Police Department is seeking school supply donations for the upcoming academic year. Learn more here.

• The Duke Robillard Quintet is scheduled to perform at The Church of St. John the Evangelist in Newport tonight at 6 p.m. Learn more here.

• A writer with Fortune Magazine recently authored "A Weekend Guide to Rhode Island" and, as you can imagine, Newport attractions and restaurants were mentioned often.

Trivia Tuesday

This Newport breakfast spot, operated by a husband and wife and known for decorating the walls with pictures of their customers, enjoyed a 23-year run before abruptly closing in February 2006. What was the name of it? Send guesses to sbarrett@newportri.com.
