Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 15

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 15, the 166th day of the year — 199 days remain in 2022. On this day 1965, Bob Dylan recorded the song “Like a Rolling Stone,” which landed at No. 1 on Rolling Stone’s 2004 list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Here & Now

• As the summertime season approaches, that means more jobs become available in an area like Aquidneck Island, which sees a high volume of tourists. Reporter Savana Dunning spoke with officials in Middletown and Newport about how it’s been trying to fill those jobs — especially on lifeguard stands — and she examines the local hospitality industry as it continues to struggle to find employees. Read her story here.

• Portsmouth Town Council Vice President Linda Ujifusa is looking to take her act to Smith Hill. She announced Tuesday she’s running for the soon-to-be vacant District 11 seat in the state Senate. Read more here.

• Speaking of the state Senate, it made a number of votes Tuesday night on proposed gun control measures. It was a long day for Providence Journal political reporter Katherine Gregg, and you can read her rundown here.

• Speaking of The Providence Journal, reporter Antonia Noori Farzi has a very interesting piece about slavery in Jamestown, and how the town has taken measures to "acknowledge a wrong." Check it out here.

• Have you tried to send an email to a city of Newport email address only to have it get bounced back? You’re not alone. Savana Dunning explains why here.

• If you’re a fan of breaking down municipal budgets, I have good news for you: Middletown and Portsmouth each will hold a public hearing tonight where you can make your voice heard. Find the agendas below.

• The Newport Bermuda Race is scheduled to begin its 52nd edition on Friday. It’ll be the first time the biennial race is held since 2018. Find everything you need to know — from how to watch the start to some of the notable teams to interesting tidbits about the race’s history — right here.

• Need your live music fix? Popular local band The Ravers are ready to rock Fort Adams State Park as the Music at the Fort concert series gets underway tonight. Also, Chelly Knight and the Dope Things are playing as part of the MLK Center's Live from the Loading Dock series. Find the complete list of all free summer concerts in Newport here.

• After The Ravers perform, newportFILM will screen "Under the Hull," which follows the 11th Hour Racing offshore sailing team. Learn more here.

• The Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District will host a public tour of Jamestown Community Farm today at 5:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public. Learn more here.

Trivia answer

Q: This Newport institution, which started as a 12-bed cottage on donated land, is still standing tall today and will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. Can you name it?

A: Newport Hospital. Learn more about its history here. I received about a dozen great guesses, but only Edna Beal, Mary Hastings, Cherie Saunders, Kathleen Toussaint, Liz Gagne and Rita Cooney Brown got it right. Kudos!
