Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 11, the 223rd day of the year — 142 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1973, the coming-of-age film “American Graffiti” was released. Starring an ensemble cast and directed by George Lucas, it was produced on a budget of $777,000 and grossed roughly $140 million.

Here & Now

• If you've driven or walked around in downtown Newport, perhaps you've seen the banner that runs along one of the historic homes in the area. It reads:

“Save 38 Pelham Street Newport RI. This House was destroyed on the 4th of July. Built when George Washington was 8 years old. One of the only remaining original homes in the USA. Insured by USAA and they are KILLING 38 PELHAM.”

So what's the story behind that sign? Reporter Savana Dunning recently spoke to the homeowner, who is doing his best to preserve what he calls "a standing museum." You'll definitely want to read this piece.

• Officials with Mayflower Wind provided an overview of the company's plan to run transmission cables across Portsmouth during Monday's meeting of the Town Council. Among the questions residents raised was: What's in it for us? When looking at similar projects in the region, the town could stand to benefit greatly. Reporter Zane Wolfang has the story.
