Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for June 30

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is June 30, the 181st day of the year — 184 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1936, the book Gone With the Wind, written by former newspaper reporter Margaret Mitchell and the basis for the famed film, was published. To date, more than 30 million copies have been printed worldwide.

Here & Now

• The Portsmouth Town Council earlier this month approved a one-year pilot program to install Flock Safety cameras on either side of the Mount Hope Bridge with the intention of preventing suicide deaths. But the town could reverse course after hearing concerns.

Reporter Zane Wolfang, who touched on this subject previously, digs even deeper, talking to a family member of a bridge suicide victim, advocates pushing for bridge barriers, the organizations that funded the camera program and a representative from the Flock Safety, who said it's very rare for these cameras to be used in bridge suicide prevention.

• The company that wants to put an expanded gas station and Seasons Market on the lot where Bishop's 4th Street Diner sits now cleared a hurdle earlier this week. Reporter Savana Dunning has the story.

• The annual fireworks display at Escobar Farm in Portsmouth scheduled for the Fourth of July has been called off. Farm owner Jane Esocbar explained to The Daily News the reasoning and said the event could be held at a later date. Read more here.

• Speaking of fireworks, the Little Compton Fireworks Committee is expected to meet this morning. Find the full agenda below.

• All this chatter about fireworks gives me an opportunity to post one of my favorite photos of the kiddos, taken last year at Escobar Farm by my lovely and talented wife Olivia.
