Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 27

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 27, the 208th day of the year — 157 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1949, the world’s first jet-propelled airliner, the British De Havilland Comet, made its maiden test-flight in England, ultimately revolutionizing the airline industry.

Here & Now

• The Newport City Council will meet tonight, and there are some items of interest on the docket. The first involves pickleball, which continues to cause a racket — get it? — for people who live near the courts. So the city is looking to take further steps to curb the noise. Read my story here.

The second interesting item has to do with a public right-of-way the local advocacy group Friends of the Waterfront feels could be infringed upon by the plans of a local restaurant. Read more from reporter Savana Dunning here. You can find the full agenda below.

• Highlighted by the sale of a property in Portsmouth for nearly $4.4 million, find the latest home sales and property transactions in Newport County here.

• Joni Mitchell's return to the Newport Folk Festival this past weekend has been all the buzz, and Providence Journal columnist Mark Patinkin has a few things to say about it.

"Some might say that Joni of course wasn’t what she was, but I’m sure that was not her goal in her return to the stage," he writes. Read his column here.

• So life got a little hectic and you couldn't attend this week's forums on school regionalization in Newport and Middletown. No sweat. Newport Public Schools on Tuesday morning published a recap of what was discussed. Read it here.

• From the inbox: Speaking of education, according to a recent study, the Providence-Warwick area ranks 91st on a list of most educated cities in the U.S. Ann Arbor, Michigan, tops the list, which you check out here.

• Gov. Dan McKee will be in Newport tonight to take part in the Newport Gulls' pregame festivities on Mark Weed Scholarship Fund Legacy Night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

• If you're willing to travel over a bridge, the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol is hosting 11th Hour Racing skipper Charlie Enright for a free event tonight at 5:30 p.m. You can meet members of the crew and check out the boat. Learn more here.

• I pour about an hour and a half into this newsletter each day because I want to keep you informed about what's happening in our community. I like to puzzle you with trivia questions and I enjoy exploring all corners of the county to see if you can guess where I am.

Without fail, my work ends up in your inbox daily — more than 300 editions each year. Why do I bring this up? Because if you love Rise & Shine! I'm asking you to support it by becoming a digital subscriber. Over the next few days, we'll be running a great deal — two full years for $22.

Once you become a subscriber, not only will you get complete access to all of the great stories and content on NewportRI.com, but you'll be uplifting my efforts in writing this newsletter day after day. You can click here to get started.

And even if you're not quite ready to subscribe, perhaps you can at least tell your friends about Rise & Shine! I've grown quite an audience since I started this newsletter three years ago, and every little bit helps. Thanks!

Trivia answer

Q: Head of the Newport Recreation Department for 26 years, this man was better known for his knowledge of area sports — especially baseball — and wrote about them often, right up until his death in 1991. Who was he?

A: George Donnelly. He penned a "Sports in the News" column for this publication for decades, and the local Sunset League bears his name. Kudos to Chris La Rose, Len Panaggio, Patrick O'Connell, M. Francis Ferri and Mike Pinto, all of whom answered correctly.
