Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 18

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 18, the 199th day of the year — 166 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt was nominated for an unprecedented third term in office despite the fact there was an unwritten rule no president should serve more than two terms. He died while in his fourth term.

Here & Now

• Kate Leonard made headlines last week when she announced she was no longer vying to be the Newport City Council's representative in Ward 3. She recently chatted with Daily News reporter Savana Dunning about her decision, which she said was made at 2 o'clock in the morning.

“I honestly got tired of the divisiveness,” Leonard said.

Leonard served 11 terms and spoke about her time in municipal government, the reason she's leaving and what's next. Read the story here.

• Catherine Eileen Johnson wore a large smile as she sat in her chair, surrounded by family members. Among them was infant Ava Beale, born earlier this year, exactly one century before her great-great-grandmother.

Johnson celebrated her 100th birthday Thursday with a family gathering at the Grand Islander assisted-living facility. I was there to capture the moment and ask Johnson her secret to longevity. Read my story here.

• Another great Tennis Week is in the books. On Saturday night, Australian Lleyton Hewitt was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and on Sunday, American Maxime Cressy won the ATP World Tour event.

• The Middletown Town Council will meet tonight, and among the items on the docket is the Middletown Center, specifically one council member who wants to discuss putting the project before voters. Find the full agenda below.

• The state Department of Transportation has provided its roadwork schedule for the upcoming week in Newport County and the rest of the state, including the repaving of East Main Road (hurray!). Find it here.

• Gov. Dan McKee will make his way to Newport today to welcome U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona, who will be in town for the three-day Institute for Education Innovation Summer Symposium being held at Hotel Viking.

• Comedian and part-time Newport resident Jay Leno kicks off his four-night run at the Firehouse Theater tonight. His sold-out performances will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.

• Portsmouth Youth Football and Cheer is holding a community cookout tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Portsmouth High School. Learn more here.

• The was some chatter on social media last week about Portsmouth police searching for a green Jeep that could be transporting a missing teen. The fine folks at the Bennington Banner, my old college stomping grounds in Vermont, have more details on the situation. Read it here.

Where in Newport County?

The Rhode Island Red Monument in the Adamsville section of Little Compton.
The Rhode Island Red Monument in the Adamsville section of Little Compton.

According to its inscription, the monument commemorates "the birthplace of the Rhode Island Red breed of fowl, which originated near this location." It was completed in 1925 by Henry L. Norton of Winthrop, Massachusetts. Kudos to Len Panaggio, Arlene Siderski, Liz Gagne, Theresa Capelo, Ann Arnold, Larry Davis and Karen Coffman, all of whom correctly identified the spot.
