Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Sept. 2

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 2, the 245th day of the year — 120 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1969, the first Automatic Teller Machine, or ATM, in the U.S. opened at Chemical Bank in Rockville Centre, New York.

Here & Now

• As a longtime newspaper man, there's a phrase that's stuck with me since I first heard it a few years back: "Journalism with impact." There's no better feeling for a reporter than knowing something you've written results in change. It's what I preach as an editor and what we strive for collectively as a newsroom.

Our newest reporter, Zane Wolfang, experienced it this week. Mere hours after we published online his story about a neglected home in Portsmouth, he received a text message from Jennifer Corcoran, a neighbor he interviewed for the story.

She said a landscaping crew had arrived that day to start removing a fallen tree on the property and pumping out the water-filled basement. "More was done in one day since your article" than had been done in the past four years, she wrote.

That's journalism with impact.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis remembers Chip Young, a freelance columnist with ties to Newport County. Read his column here.

• In topics ranging from the music department at Middletown High School to the debacle on Block Island, find a week's worth of letters to the editor here.

• According to Salve Regina University spokesman Matt Boxler, first-year students will be arriving on campus today between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

• Highlighted by the sale of a unit at Clock Tower Square in Portsmouth, find the latest property transactions in Newport County here.

• We're less than two weeks before primary election day, and we've put together a voter rights guide that tells you what you need to know. Find it here.

• Here's a rundown of scores from Thursday night's Injury Fund high school football games: Portsmouth defeated Rogers 6-0; Mount Hope topped host Tiverton 17-7; and Middletown blanked East Greenwich 21-0. Look for full coverage — including photo galleries — coming up on NewportRI.com.

• Thriving Tree Coffee House in Portsmouth will be showing "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" tonight at 5:30 p.m. Learn more here.

• The state Department of Health is recommending no swimming at Sandy Point Beach in Portsmouth and the Surfer's End of Sachuest Beach in Middletown because of high bacteria levels.

• From the inbox: My daughter Harper this fall will be participating in Girls on the Run and toward the end of the season is a parent-child 5K. I was a runner back in my heyday — not to brag, but I once clocked a 5:40 mile — though it's been years since I've put in any miles. I'd better break out my tennis shoes.

Anyhoo, according to a recent study, Rhode Island is the 23rd most active state in the U.S. Montana and Vermont top the list, while Mississippi ranks last. Find the full breakdown here.
