Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Aug. 19

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 19, the 231st day of the year — 134 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1812, the U.S. Naval ship Constitution defeated British counterpart Guerriere in a battle off the coast of Nova Scotia to earn the moniker “Old Ironsides.”

Here & Now

• I can recall the first time I met Frank Newsome. It was the fall of 2005, when I first took over as sports editor at The Daily News, and the Vikings were playing in a postseason football game at Toppa Field.

Newsome was in his second year as head coach of the program, and he steered Rogers to a 32-8 win over East Providence that night. The Vikings went on to beat Cranston West to claim the Division I non-state Super Bowl.

Over the years, Frank and I got along very well, building a strong coach-reporter rapport. What I enjoyed most is whether his team won or lost, Frank always spoke his mind, but did so from his heart. He was dedicated to that program and his players.

Now that Frank has hung up his whistle to spend more time with his children, a new head coach at Rogers has been named — and the selection committee didn't have to go very far to find him. Sports reporter Steve Rogers has the story.

• Despite the fact Portsmouth shut the door on installing Flock Safety cameras on its side of the Mount Hope Bridge, the chief of police in Bristol, Kevin Lynch, presented his case this week to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. Read more from reporter Zane Wolfang here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes his hated of going back to school can be squarely blamed on Jerry Lewis. Read his column here.

• From the inbox: According to a recent study, the most common do-it-yourself home project among Rhode Islanders is faux leather wallpaper. I didn't even know that was a thing. Anyhoo, check out the state-by-state list here.
