Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 29

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 29, the 210th day of the year — 155 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1958, U.S Congress passed legislation to establish the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an independent agency of the federal government responsible for the country’s activities in space.

Here & Now

• Whether it was baseball pants, soccer socks or a backyard game for a barbecue, the Olympia Sports location on East Main Road in Middletown was always there in a pinch.

Soon it won't be.

The last sporting goods store on Aquidneck Island will close its doors by the end of September, joining the remaining 34 Olympia Sports locations in the northeast region as the company goes out of business. Reporter Zane Wolfang has the story.

• The Newport Charter Review Commission over the course of a few months examined the city's governing document and drafted 37 potential changes. The City Council, over the course of a few hours, whittled that number to just five — most of which are simple language alterations — and those are the ones that will go before voters in November. Reporter Savana Dunning explains why here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes the owner of Atlantic Sports Bar & Restaurant must do more than just apologize for posting an anti-Semitic meme on social media. Read his column here.

• State Rep. John G. Edwards, whose district covers the north end of Tiverton, also has some thoughts on the Atlantic Sports Bar situation. He put pen to paper and wrote an opinion piece you can find here.

• The Tiverton High School Athletic Hall of Fame this week announced its Class of 2022, a group of 10 athletes, a former coach and a championship team. I was fortunate enough to see three of the athletes play. Find out who they are here.

• In the same breath, the National Sailing Hall of Fame — now located right here on Thames Street in Newport — also just named its Class of 2022. Read more about the inductees here.

• In topics ranging from how Aquidneck Island has changed, to a proposed Tiverton gas station, to the Middletown library, find a week's worth of letters to the editor here.

• Good luck to the Portsmouth Little League all-stars, who are playing for the state championship tonight in North Providence.

• The three-day Newport Jazz Festival kicks off today at Fort Adams State Park. There will be plenty of great performers, but these five acts can be considered must-see.

• Just a reminder the state Department of Environmental Management restricts sections of Fort Adams for the festivals. Learn more here.

• From the inbox: According to a recent study, Providence ranks No. 49 on a list of the best U.S. cities for naked bicycling. Seriously. Chicago tops the list, which is based on a series of 28 metrics. I'm not making this up. Find the full list here.
