Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 22

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 22, the 203rd day of the year — 162 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1999, the Woodstock music festival kicked off in Rome, New York. While the event drew another large crowd, unlike its predecessor, this edition was cut short because of violence.

Here & Now

• Opposition to development is a hot topic throughout Newport County, and Tiverton is no outlier. A group of residents have banded together to form Preserve Tiverton, and its members have their sights set on a proposed 24-hour gas stations and Seasons market slated for the intersection of Main and Souza roads. Reporter Zane Wolfang has the story.

• As consultants explained the possible savings in educational operations costs and better educational opportunities for kids through a regional Newport-Middletown school district, municipal leaders raised concerns over how exactly the consultants got to these numbers. Reporter Savana Dunning breaks down Wednesday night's joint meeting here.

• Some sad news to report: The 9-year-old boy pulled from the water at Easton's Beach earlier this week has died. Keven Arruda of Somerset, Massachusetts, was remembered as "a role model" and "friendly with everyone." Read more here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes that whether you like it or not, the proposed Middletown Center development project is a done deal because the Town Council has its mind made up. Read his column here.

• A very astute reader pointed out I included the wrong link when writing about Editor Will Richmond's roundup of weekend events. Find the correct link here.

• The group Friends of the Waterfront will hold its annual meeting, the first since the start of the COVID pandemic, today at 3:30 p.m. at King Park. The public is welcome to attend. Learn more here.

• After the Friends of the Waterfront meeting, stick around for some music. Bill Killian's Instrumental Voyages and Irish in America are performing at King Park tonight from 5 to 7 p.m.

• Jamestown resident Ben Tuff today will tackle perhaps his toughest challenge yet — swimming the length of Narragansett Bay to raise money for Clean Ocean Access. Read more here.

• The Rhode Island Interscholastic League is looking to get in touch with members of the 1972 Middletown High School championship football team for a 50th anniversary celebration. The Islanders defeated East Greenwich 20-7 to win the Class B title. Learn more here.

• Speaking of high school sports, Steve Rogers reports on four softball players from Newport County schools who will only get better as the years go on. Read about them here.

• From the inbox: According to a list put together by those at livability.com, Newport is among the top 100 places to live in the U.S., coming in at No. 99. Madison, Wisconsin, is No. 1, while the first New England spot mentioned is Quincy, Massachusetts, at No. 49. Find the full list here.
