Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Nov. 18

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, digital editor for The Daily News, and today is Nov. 18, the 322nd day of the year — 43 days remain in 2021. On this day in 1883, the United States and Canada began using time zones to end confusion stemmed from railroad companies transporting passengers and freights over long distances to cities and towns that set their time locally based on the position of the sun.

Here & Now

• The cameras were rolling in Newport on Wednesday. No, not "Hocus Pocus 2" but rather The Cooking Channel's "Man v. Food," a reality show in which host Casey Webb has a limited amount of time to eat a certain amount food.

In this case, he tackled the Hungry Monkey’s “Go Bananas French Toast Challenge." Reporter Savana Dunning was there to watch the proceedings. Read her story here.

• This was hardly the first time reality television has come to the City-by-the-Sea. Editor Will Richmond, himself a reality TV junkie, put together a list of instances in which the cameras rolled locally. Check it out here.

• It's the time of the year when we get to look back and reflect on all of great aspects of our lives. Simply put, to give thanks. Reporter Sean Flynn is working on a story for next week, and he wants to hear from you. What were you thankful for in 2021?

Sure, there's health and family, but if you peel back the layers of the onion, what truly made you thankful? If you feel you have a good submission, send it to Sean via email at sflynn@newportri.com, and it could end up in his story.

• The New England Patriots head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons tonight. The last time these teams met, the Patriots rallied from a 28-3 deficit to win Super Bowl 51. What an amazing night that was.

As for this week's game, email your prediction (winner and final score) to sbarrett@newportri.com, and whoever comes closest gets a shout in Friday's edition of Rise & Shine! For what it's worth, I don't think a huge comeback will be needed this time around. Patriots cruise to a 34-17 victory.

• Homeowners near National Grid's liquefied natural gas facility on Old Mill Lane in Portsmouth are opposed to its location because they are worried about possible safety hazards in connection with LNG and its delivery by heavy tanker trucks. They also do not like the noise of the operation and the lighting. So National Grid might try to buy them out. Sean Flynn has the story.

• Daily News food columnist Dan Lederer this week writes that the filming of "Hocus Pocus 2" on Washington Square was not only fun to watch, but the hoopla surrounding the production provided a big boost for nearby restaurants. Read his column here.

• The Newport and Middletown police departments, in conjunction with the Butler Basketball Club, are hosting a free turkey basket giveaway today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pell Elementary School. The baskets are available with vouchers. Email Patrol Officer Nicholas St. Lawrence at nstlawrence@cityofnewport.com for a voucher.

• From the inbox: My lovely wife might dispute this, but the first word both of my children uttered was "dada." The most common first word, though, is "mommy." Find a country-by-country breakdown of baby's first words here.

• A week after reporting its lowest weekly COVID case total in since late July, Newport County identified the most cases in a single week since late April. Find the latest data from the state Department of Health here.
