Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, digital editor for The Daily News, and today is Jan. 18, the 18th day of the year — 347 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1986, the song “That’s What Friends are For,” recorded by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention, reached No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts.
Here & Now
• The swim team coach at Rogers High School has been fired because of allegations he sent inappropriate text messages to students. While school officials couldn't say much about the situation, citing "personnel matters," the coach spoke at length to reporter Sean Flynn about what went wrong and to clarify what was written and done.
"I obviously lapsed," said Paul Silverzweig, who also served as a substitute teacher at the high school. Read this exclusive story here.
• Mark Stickey, a 1991 Portsmouth High School graduate, is a conductor and has taught music at the college level for 20 years. His latest endeavor involves re-creating tunes from Gilded Age Newport using sound-editing software. Sean Flynn has the story.
• Sean's been a pretty busy guy. He's also got a story about the city of Newport entering a contract with architect and engineering firms to design a new building to replace the badly deteriorated Carousel and Snack Bar buildings at Easton’s Beach. Read that story here.
• The Rogers High School boys basketball team is off to a strong start this season thanks to a trio of scorers. While Elijah Neal, Darian Piker and Izayah King like putting the ball in the basket, winning is the only thing that matters. Read more from sports reporter Steve Rogers here.
• Speaking of high school sports, find the nominees and cast your ballot for The Newport Daily News Athlete of the Week here.
• Gov. Dan McKee will deliver his first State of the State address tonight at 7 p.m. Catch it on Capitol TV or via the governor's Facebook page.
• The Middletown Town Council will meet tonight, and perhaps the most interesting item on the agenda is the school budget for the next fiscal year. Find the full agenda below.
• The Jamestown Town Council will meet tonight, and up for discussion and a possible vote is a proposed short-term rental ordinance. Find the full agenda below.
• Rhode Island’s average gas price wen down 1 cent from last week, now averaging $3.35 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast. That's 3 cents lower than a month ago, $1.01 higher than a year ago and 4 cents higher than the current national average.

Trivia Tuesday
This famed Newport watering hole, which closed a decade or so ago, at one time didn't allow female patrons inside. "Women are too many headaches," the owner, a well-dressed man for whom the bar was named, told The Providence Journal in 1971. Name that establishment. Send guesses to sbarrett@newportri.com.
