Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Feb. 28

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, digital editor for The Daily News, and today is Feb. 28, the 59th day of the year — 306 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1983, more than 77% of the television viewing audience tuned in for the 256th and final episode of M*A*S*H — titled “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen” — after an 11-season run.

Here & Now

• Roughly five years ago, the powers that be at the National Sailing Hall of Fame, then located in Annapolis, Maryland, approached leaders in Newport about bringing the facility to the City-by-the-Sea, specifically the Armory building that once housed press conference after America's Cup races.

There was no shortage of drama, because in order to get the Sailing Hall of Fame into the city-owned building, the vendors who sold their goods in the Armory Antique Marketplace would have to find a new home.

Ultimately, the building was sold and — after some delays related to the COVID pandemic — The Sailing Museum is set to open in early May. Reporter Savana Dunning was given a tour and spoke with Executive Director Heather Ruhsam about what visitors can expect. Read her story here.

• In need of a new car? The Portsmouth Police Department is auctioning off a 2004 Mini Cooper, a 2005 Volvo S80 and 2004 Lincoln LS, with proceeds from the sales going back to the department. These online auctions are open to the public, but they end this morning so act fast. Learn more here.

• From the inbox: Speaking of cars, Rhode Islanders are among the most likely to buy used over new, according to a recent analysis. The Ocean State ranks No. 3 in the U.S. Find the state-by-state breakdown and other tidbits here.

• Sunday was a big day at the local hockey rinks as Portsmouth the RMR co-op team hosted playoff games. We'll have full recaps and photo galleries from both games coming up this morning on NewportRI.com.

• Winners of the annual Aquidneck Land Trust Art & Writing Contest have been named. Check out all 25 student honorees and some of the winning entries here.

• The state Department of Transportation has provided its weekly roadwork schedule for Newport County and throughout the state. Find it here.

• The Portsmouth and Tiverton town councils are scheduled to meet tonight. In Portsmouth, among the items to be discussed are the capital requests for fiscal year 2023. In Tiverton, there is the potential renaming of streets in town. Find both agendas and login information below.

• Today is the deadline for high school seniors to apply for college scholarships of up to $20,000 a year through Carter Roger Williams Initiative at the Rhode Island Foundation. Learn more here.
