Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Nov. 19

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, digital editor for The Daily News, and today is Nov. 19, the 323rd day of the year — 42 days remain in 2021. On this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address. It's one of the most memorable speeches in history, yet contains just 272 words.

Here & Now

• If you're a big fan of Bishop's 4th Street Diner in Newport, you could have a limited time to eat there. The company that owns the land on which the diner sits has plans for a larger convenience store and gas station. The Daily News has learned Bishop's has until the end of January to vacate the premises.

"It's a shocker," co-owner Steve Bishop told reporter Sean Flynn. "We just got the letter yesterday. I don't know what we are going to do."

He said his wife Vicki was looking into consulting with an attorney. "It's terrible," Bishop said. "It's a big company. They have all the money and the big lawyers. They don't care about a Mom and Pop business."

Read the full story — which details the plans for the property along the JT Connell Highway rotary, as well as the history of the diner — here.

• Sean Flynn visited Bishop's diner last week to talk to patrons about what it would be like to not have the restaurant around. “I love Bishop’s,” said Sarah Hudson of Middletown. “This is the friendliest place in Newport when you go out to eat, and the food is always delicious. I would be devastated if they tore it down. So many other restaurants are fancy and uninviting.” Read that story here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis reveals his favorite — and least favorite — movies that were filmed in Newport. He also has his usual tidbits and musings. Read his column here.

• HBO provided its first look at "The Gilded Age," which was partially filmed in Newport. Check out the sneak peek and when the show will air here.

• The New England Patriots steamrolled the Atlanta Falcons 25-0 on Thursday night. While everyone who submitted a score felt the Pats would win, Richard Peters had the largest point differential with his 35-17 prediction. Thanks to everyone who emailed.

• Daily News wine columnist Len Panaggio offers a list of wines that pair well with Thanksgiving dinner and won't break the bank. Read his column here.

• Sharpen those skates, the ice rink at Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina opens today. Find out what you need to know here.

• From the inbox: Using data based on Christmas-related Google searches, Christmas shopping searches and Christmas song plays on YouTube over the past five years, it was determined that New Hampshire is the most festive state in the U.S. Rhode Island ranks No. 9, and Nevada is dead last.
