Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 23-24

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 23, the 204th day of the year — 161 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1996, highlighted by a performance on the vault from Kerri Strug, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team took home the team gold at the Summer Games in Atlanta.

• We've heard a lot about the new Rogers High School, and even reported on the first shovels going into the ground. But below-the-surface details have been scarce. Until now. The fine folks at Involve Newport recently posted a 48-page Power Point presentation that unveils the what, where and when. Find it here.

• Sports reporter Steve Rogers wraps up his high school spring season coverage — a total of 64 student-athletes were recognized — by writing about Newport County baseball players on the rise. See who they are here.

• In topics ranging from local elections to saving democracy, find a week's worth of letters to the editor here.

• Author Ken Dooley, who late last year released his fascinating memoir, will be on hand today from 3 to 5 p.m. for a book signing at the Museum of Newport Irish History, 648 Thames St. Learn more here.

• So you didn't get tickets to the Newport Folk Festival. You can still catch some great music on Sunday when Down City Band rocks King Park from 3 to 6 p.m. Learn more here.

• A food truck festival is taking place Saturday at New England Boatworks in Portsmouth on Saturday from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free — just pay for what you eat or drink. Grab a blanket or chairs and enjoy the sunset. Learn more here.

• Have some thoughts on the operation at Sachuest and Third beaches in Middletown? The town wants you to speak up by taking a survey on what's working and what's not. Learn more here.

• From the inbox: Speaking of beaches, according to a recent study by veterinarians.org, Newport County is home to three of the state's 10 most dog-friendly beaches. Find the full list and read about each here.

• Have a safe and happy weekend!
